But take a closer look...

There is hidden life everywhere.

Our world is full of organisms so small they can only be seen with a microscope.

These living things are called microorganisms.

Microorganisms

There are three main types of microorganism: viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Some bacteria can be harmful, but others are very useful.

For example, we add bacteria to milk to turn it into cheese or yoghurt.

We also have bacteria living in our bodies that help us to digest food.

fungi

Many fungi are microorganisms.

We add a fungus called yeast to bread to make it rise.

The fungus growing on this rotting food is called mould.

mould

It would make you ill, but it's vital to the environment as it breaks down matter and releases its nutrients.

There are trillions upon trillions of microorganisms in the world.

Many of them are really helpful, but there are others that cause disease.
