Consumers contribute a lot to the world economy.

This helps to pay the wages of all the people involved in bringing things like bananas to the market.

Farmers, factory workers, sailors, delivery drivers and shop assistants.

Shopping

Shopping has existed for thousands of years, but the way we shop is constantly changing.

In ancient times, people would visit open-air markets.

Some stalls were temporary while others were permanent.

These permanent stalls were the first shops.

Back then as now some shops specialised in specific items – for example, cheese.

New York, USA
1930

In 1930, a new kind of shop opened in the USA, a supermarket.

Supermarkets sell everything in one place, and quickly became popular all over the world.

Today an ever-increasing number of people buy their goods online and have them delivered directly to their homes.

As well as how and where we buy things, what we consume has also changed over the years.

In the past the goods in shops would have come mostly from the surrounding area.

Today we can buy things from all over the world.

Like bananas from Costa Rica, tea from India and salmon from Scotland.

So next time you are shopping, ask yourself where the things you are buying might have come from and how they got to your shopping basket.

How we shop is constantly changing.

This banana has travelled thousands of kilometres.

It has travelled from a plantation in Costa Rica to a shop in Germany.
